Quick and Easy Ways to Child Proof Your Apartment

As a parent, you are constantly worried about the safety of your child, especially if you have a toddler. While there several external threats to your precious baby, you must no ignore the possible ways your child can get hurt inside your home. Be it sharp objects, electronics or other potentially dangerous items, it is essential to childproof your home.   Despite all the gadgets available in the market today, the best way to keep your baby safe is to supervise them at all times. Even if you aren’t at home, ensure that you get a nanny, a babysitter, or a trusted friend or relative to keep track of the child’s activities around the house. Your baby should never be left alone in a room, especially when they reach the age of crawling and exploring. Here is a simple guide to child proofing your home.   What does your baby see?   The most effective way to assess your child’s safety is to see their point of view. It may look a little silly to get down on all fours and seeing your house from a low angle, but it is the most helpful way to understand what your child can see.  Find the nooks and crannies in your home where your child can crawl or walk into. Look out for objects that look tempting from their point of view and assess their danger levels. Determine which cabinets and cupboards are within reach. You have to reevaluate your options as your child grows and learns to walk or climb.   Where to start childproofing?    Ensure that you lock away cleaning products, medicines, vitamins, knives and other dangerous objects in high cabinets that are completely out of reach. You can also use gates in your living room or bedroom to prevent your child from accessing dangerous items in the room. If you find small objects that are also choking hazards, remove them from the premises immediately. These objects can include anything from beads, marbles, coins, paper clips, and other items that can be found near your tables or cabinets.   Electrical outlets should also be covered with safety latches and all exposed extension cords and outlets should be covered with electrical tape. If you have heavy furniture or fixtures around the house like dressers, appliances and bookcases, ensure that you lock them up and push them against the wall. This not only secures the furniture but also minimizes chances of access.   Babies tend to pull on furniture and use them for support once they learn to walk, crawl and stand up. This is why it is important to ensure that you do not have stands, chairs or other furniture on wheels. Secure your windows and doors with locks and ensure that they grilled. This prevents your baby from exploring and climbing through the window sills, often at dangerous heights. The next most important room to childproof in your home is the bathroom. Water can be dangerous for children, especially bathtubs, toilets and large sinks. Ensure that all toilets are secured with child lock tops and that the bathrooms floors are dry and slip-free.
